Cape Girardeau Police Introduce New Firearms, Ammunition Detection K-9

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – Cape Girardeau Police have a new member on the force with some very special skills.

Meet K-9 Ella, a 2-year-old German Wirehair Pointer from Greece.

According to the police department, K-9 Ella is trained to detect firearms and ammunition in a variety of ways, including objects, buildings, cabinets, person-borne and open areas.

Cape Girardeau police said Ella is the first firearms and ammunition detection K-9 in the area.

Her long-term handler is Corporal Spencer. The team has reportedly successfully completed their first 6-week training.

The Cape Girardeau City Council approved funding for K-9 Ella and two other K-9s during Monday night’s Nov. 18 session. The two other police dogs will replace the recently retired K-9 units.
