The Brookhaven Elementary School teacher is the first to win the Mountain Movers Award in Monongalia County

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WDTV) – A good teacher can make the ultimate difference in a young person’s life. From being a source of inspiration to another leader a child can trust; the role teachers play in the development of the future generation cannot be measured. Therefore, the least we can do is recognize these everyday heroes for the incredible work they do. In Mon County, Mrs. Heather Echard, an autism teacher at Brookhaven Elementary School, recently Mountain Mover Award. A recognition that serves as a thank you to educators who are committed to inspiring and uplifting students. Mrs. Echard has only taught at Brookhaven for two years, but her impact has not gone unnoticed. Receiving this award makes her the first recipient of the honor in Mon County.

“It’s such an amazing feeling. Obviously, teachers don’t do it for the fame or fortune, but it’s great to be recognized for all the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my career. I just felt honored to represent Brookhaven, I know that there are a lot of good things going on here. There are so many dedicated teachers and it’s just a great feeling for me to be recognized.

Although winning the award was certainly an honor for Mrs. Echard; the real satisfaction comes from getting to work with his students every day.

“Special Ed, it takes a lot of patience, a lot of consistency. Never give up, show up every day and expect the same high standards as any other student within the school. It might look different and it might have a little extra support, like pictures or an extra person on hand; but they still have high expectations. We see a lot of growth because of those high expectations.”

The future is bright for Mrs. Echard and the Bulls of Brookhaven and receiving this award makes it shine a little brighter. Knowing this is just the beginning and there is plenty of room for optimism.

” Being a part of something bigger. Seeing growth and seeing success in everyone. My favorite thing about Brookhaven is the community. The administration, my teachers are the best here. Everyone is just so supportive and everyone is a family, and we create a village for every student.”
