Littlestown School District receives $1 million in grants as work on high school continues

As work continues on extensive renovations in the Littlestown Area School District, local officials announced $1 million in grants awarded to the district.

The two grants announced by Rep. Dan Moul’s (R-Adams) office in a press release Wednesday, October 23, 2024, was issued by the Public School Facility Improvement Grant program.

Both grants will go toward, among other things, HVAC updates, which will “enhance the learning environment in the classroom,” Moul said in the release.

According to the release, a $500,000 grant will allow Alloway Creek Elementary School to replace its HVAC systems, along with the roof.

The other $500,000 grant is directed to the district’s high school, which will go toward upgrading the HVAC system to add air conditioning, as well as replacing windows in the building, which will be “more energy efficient and have more secure locking mechanisms,” together with having shatterproof glass.

The announcement of the grant came as the Littlestown Area School District is 13 months into a massive overhaul of the district’s high school, which will eventually consolidate both the district’s middle and high schools into one building.

Construction began on the project on Sept. 13, 2023, and is expected to be complete by Nov. 21, 2025, according to school board minutes.

The extensive renovations will almost completely overhaul the 1960s-era high school and replace the district’s Maple Avenue Middle School, which dates back to the 1930s.

The latest update on the project, given to an October 14, 2024 school board meeting, said that exterior brick and block work is nearly complete on the project and that pumps and boilers were installed, along with a temporary bus exit on Parkway Drive.
