Wike reveals some of his headaches as FCT minister

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has lamented that the existing procurement legislation was preventing projects from being completed on time.

Wike stated this on Friday, at the flag off to commence the development of arterial road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way) from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Abuja.

He said the amendment to the procurement law would help remove the bureaucratic bottlenecks that were slowing the execution of projects in the nation’s capital.

The FCT minister said: “Part of our problem, part of our big headache is the procurement law. the procurement law, yes, it is to protect and make sure that our money is safe. But then, if you look at the overall situation , it pulls us back.”

Wike said that in some cases, some procurements would take almost four months to be approved.

Speaking further, Wike said he had to change such laws as governor, adding: “We changed the law to say that in every job we have done with Julius Berger then we will pay 70 percent. That is how we could do 12 flights in four years.”

Wike thanked Tinubu and said the president has supported him as FCT minister in the execution of capital projects.
