Lawmakers secure more than $3.7 million in state funding for projects in the region | News, sports, jobs

Two state lawmakers helped secure $3.7 million in funding for community, economic development and school improvement projects in Lycoming and Union counties, according to a news release.

State Sen. Gene Yaw, R-Loyalsock Township, and state Rep. Jamie Flick, R-South Williamsport, recently announced that $3,790,012 in state funding has been awarded.

The funding was considered and approved at a meeting of the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) in Harrisburg.

“The awards announced today will be incredibly impactful for our communities by funding important economic development, infrastructure, public safety, recreation and school improvement projects,” Yaw said, according to the press release. “Many of these improvements are desperately needed due to aging infrastructure, some of which has not seen significant upgrades in decades. I am grateful to Rep. Flick for working with me to secure this funding.”

“This funding is critical because it allows us to share the benefits with as many people as possible and support infrastructure-related projects that help businesses, community members and visitors stay safe and strong,” Flick said, according to the press release. “In addition, I am pleased to recognize the needs of the South Williamsport Area School District and secure the funding necessary for significant upgrades to its building. It is always a pleasure to work with Senator Yaw to see projects like this come to fruition and ensure that our communities get the resources they deserve.”

The following projects received funding through the government’s Local Share Account (LSA) program:

Lycoming County

Montgomery Water Authority — Broad Street and Wagner Avenue Water Main Replacement Project, $996,000.

Williamsport Municipal Water Authority — water main replacement project, $963,251

Lycoming County — Central Forensics Facility Purchase, $346,511

Williamsport City Redevelopment Authority — Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity Construction Equipment Purchase, $311,045

Union County

White Deer Township — Community Park Roof Repair and ADA Upgrades, $173,205

“Williamsport Municipal Water Authority (WMWA) is grateful for this LSA award to assist with water main replacement in the First Street corridor,” said Michael Miller, WMWA’s executive director, according to the press release. “This replacement addresses undersized power grids and provides system redundancy critical to supporting this redevelopment project in the City of Williamsport. We appreciate Sen. Yaw and Rep. Flick’s extensive leadership in supporting our critical infrastructure.”

In addition, the South Williamsport Area School District received $1 million through the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program (PSFIG) for infrastructure upgrades to the high school’s HVAC system, ADA accessibility and its energy conservation projects.

PSFIG provides grants to public school districts and area career and technical schools for eligible facility improvement projects. The program is administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development under the direction of the CFA.

The PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, as amended, provides for the distribution of gaming revenues through the CFA to support public interest projects within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. CFA was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus programs. CFA reviews and evaluates applications based on cost, strategic importance and impact.
