Sebastian Stan reveals the big franchise role he almost got before Bucky Barnes’ debut, and I would have liked to see this happen

Even if Sebastian Stans rise to fame began when he played Carter Baizen on Gossip Girlit was cast as Bucky Barnes, the would-be Winter Soldierin Captain America: The First Avenger which brought him global recognition. Had the story unfolded differently, however, there is a world where we could have seen Stan play James T. Kirk in Star Trek franchise. While I’m happy with how things turned out for the actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I still would have liked to see how he would do playing this iconic sci-fi character.

In addition to discussing lose playing Green Lantern and confirms that his upcoming Marvel movie thunderbolts* went through some major rewritesSebastian Stan spent some time during his chat with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused opens up about how he came close to being cast as Kirk in the 2009s Star Trekthe reboot that took place in the alternate Kelvin timeline and was followed by 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness and the 2016s Star Trek Beyond. Regarding the leading roles he lost during his career, Stan said the following:

There were a couple of things I didn’t get that I really desperately wanted. But Captain Kirk for JJ Abrams, that was one of the first ones I got really close to. I remember being really, really close, and I remember having a screen test with (Abrams) at Paramount and my manager had me do a separate shoot where I would try to replicate all these William Shatner shots just to send to him , see how much I looked like him, but I didn’t understand it.

Before I go any further, let me say that I have absolutely no problem with it Chris Pines Kirk prominence. He did a great job of channeling the same kind of energy as William Shatner aired when he played the character in Star Trek: The Original Series and the later films, but he never came off as just doing a Shatner impression. If Star Trek 4 ever gets off the ground, I’d happily welcome Pine to have another crack at the captain on USS Enterprise.

Still, I think Sebastian Stan could have played a great James T. Kirk as well. He also has the right physical appearance and performance that would have served him well as the cocky rule breaker who would become one of the most iconic figures in Starfleet history. The only concern I have in this alternate version of the story is whether Stan would have had time to play both Kirk and Bucky, especially given how the latter has become increasingly important in the MCU. If not, I’m glad things shook out the way they did.

As already mentioned, there have been no recent updates on if Star Trek 4 will move forward. Instead Star Trek the origins movie is next on the franchise’s theatrical slate, and is expected to be released at some point on it 2025 movie schedule.
