Authorities are actively searching for a suspect accused of carjacking an 80-year-old man outside Silver Cross Hospital earlier this week.

According to New Lenox police, Kyle Sears is wanted on charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking, vehicular trespass, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated battery.

The incident happened around 6.10pm on Wednesday when police responded to a call about a stolen vehicle in Silver Cross.

Officers learned the 80-year-old man, who had been released from the hospital, was helped into the passenger seat of the van. At this time, Sears allegedly entered the driver’s side and began driving with the victim partially seated inside.

Sears allegedly pushed the man from the vehicle, causing the van to hit him as Sears fled the scene. Police officers later recovered the vehicle in Joliet, but Sears remains at large.

The treatment of the suspect, who was injured in the lower part of his body, continues.

An arrest warrant was issued for Sears on Thursday. Police say his last known address was Shorewood, but they believe he may be homeless at this time.

Anyone with information on Sears’ whereabouts is asked to contact the New Lenox Police Department at 815-485-2500.
